Sulfur hexafluoride is one of the inorganic compounds with the formula SF6. It has no color, odor and it is non-toxic and non-flammable gas when kept under standard conditions.
SF6 has an octahedral geometry, which consists of six fluorine atoms that are attached to a central sulfur atom. It is a hypervalent molecule. Typical for a nonpolar gas, it is poorly soluble in water but is soluble in nonpolar organic solvents. It is transported in the form of a liquefied compressed gas. SF6 has a density of 6.13 g/L at sea level conditions, which is significantly higher than the density of atmosphere air.
